Thrashers sign Ladd for year;Former Chicago forward gets $2.35 million deal to avoid arbitration.

The Thrashers signed Andrew Ladd to a one-year contract worth $2.35 million Thursday, avoiding arbitration on the day of the scheduled hearing. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound forward, obtained from Stanley Cup champion Chicago in June, received a qualifying offer from the team following the trade and then filed for arbitration.

The NHL Players' Association has just announced that Tim Kennedy was awarded a one-year, $1 million deal in arbitration. The Sabres have 48 hours to accept the award, which I would imagine they'll certainly do, or they can walk away from it. Kennedy made $635,000 last season.

Yesterday morning, an hour before their scheduled arbitration hearing, Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson told defenseman Anton Stralman that the ugliness about to play out was not to be taken personally. About 55 minutes later, a deal was struck. Stralman, the Blue Jackets' most offensively gifted defenseman and their top power-play point man, signed a one-year, $1.95 million contract that prevented the Jackets' first arbitration hearing.
